New Church at Canton

Watonga Indian Baptist in is proud to share in the project of starting a new church. In cooperation with the American Baptists (ABC-USA), and the Cooperating Baptist Fellowship of Oklahoma (CBFO), we are beginning a new church in Canton. Canton is located 25 miles northwest of Watonga. The new church will be officially aligned with the ABC-USA and will be a partner in work with the CBFO.

The new work was initiated by Dr. Richard Kahoe, who formerly pastored our church. He began preaching at Canton in 2003.  His desire was to provide an opportunity for Native American Baptists to worship and reach other Native Americans for Christ. Watonga Indian Baptist Church became the "mother church or record" for the new church start.

In September of 2004, a house was purchased for new church to worship in. (The new work, called "Native American Ministries in Canton" has been meeting in the facility owned by the Canton Indian Mennonite Church, which is located two miles south of Canton.) The new property, located in the heart of Canton, is being renovated and hopefully by Summer the new church will begin worshipping in their own facilities. The new facility is easily accessible for those who have limited transportation.

John David White Eagle, a Native American member of the Cheyenne tribe and resident of Canton, felt the call of God to enter the pastoral ministry. For about a year now, John has been serving as associate pastor of the new church, assisting Richard in the work there. WIBC felt led to formally license John to the gospel ministry.  So on 1/23/2005, we formally licensed John and presented him with the certificate of license. John preached the morning sermon.

The photographs below are a visual testimony to the special service.
