BEECHNUT CHEWING TOBACCO
Shirley Young Wilson

I have many happy memories of the time I lived at the Murdock home. I would like to share one of those memories with you.

One afternoon Mr. Murdock had some chores to do out at the Flick farm. He asked Sis and me to go with him. On the way out, Sis opened the glove box of the car and found a package of beech-nut chewing tobacco.

We asked Mr. Murdock how it tasted, and with a twinkle in his eye, he said,"It's good and it is kinda sweet." We asked him if we could try some and he agreed. We should have known by the smile on his face we were making a bad decision! He told us to pinch off a small piece and put it between our teeth and jaw. We did, and for two or three minutes, Mr. Murdock was right. It was sweet and didn't taste bad. The next thing we did, however, was a burning mistake. We chewed.......and then we swallowed!!! My throat started to burn. I looked at Lin, and I could tell she had the big burn in her throat also.

At this point we desperately needed to get rid of the Beechnut, but Mr. Murdock wouldn't stop until we reached the Flick farm. The tobacco awoke every taste bud in our mouth and so we swallowed and burned and swallowed and burned. I think Lin's feet hit the ground before the car stopped at the farm.

We immediately got rid of the beech-nut. Needless to say, one would not have mistaken us for anything but "white". We were both white as a sheet. Our toes were probably white.

Mr. Murdock finished his work and we started back to Hammon. By now we were feeling a little better, but our throat still burned. With that smile on his face that so many of you would recognize he asked,"You gals want another chew"?
